A Simple Description of Heaven on Earth

People intuitively feel that the world is broken. Those who lean too far into the pessimism fall into hedonism or apathy. The mature response is one of acceptance of the brokenness, but continued hope that things can get better.

Because the world is broken, it requires someone to save it.

Some people lean towards grandiosity (more common than you think), and conclude, “I can save the world/climate/politics.” They either become cult leaders themselves, or burn out once this self-opinion diverges too far from reality.

Some people look for a savior in charismatic politicians, founders, or cult leaders. Inevitably the flaws of those characters come out, usually leaving their followers very disenchanted.

Some people deny the possibility of saving the world, and loop back to hedonism or apathy, tacitly adopting powerlessness and believing in determinism.

It seems obvious that the best path is to accept responsibility for certain things, but not all things. Usually this manifests as a sense of purpose in response to a unique set of actions that can only be undertaken by you.

But just as the world is broken, so are we. And thus the actions that we would undertake are flawed, near-sighted, incomplete. We need to look beyond, to follow something - or someone - other than ourselves.

We cannot be the saviors, but we must pick a savior good enough to warrant following (it’s a short list of people who claimed to be perfect and really were), and to accept the flaws of any actual humans.

The beauty of this is that the actions in of themselves won’t save the world, but if everyone were to take that path, the world would be saved. Heaven on Earth is the collective co-creation of Heaven.
