The Daily Weigh-in: choose your homepage wisely

If you want to lose weight, you should start every day by weighing yourself on a scale.

The measurable things that you check every day will modulate your behavior.

Putting scales in place through your day is a lever to make progress. Having a homepage is extremely important.

The most impactful system I built as a VC was a set of interfaces in Airtable, which I called “Farouk’s homepage.” There were 4 tabs, one for each core function of my job, and I would open that homepage every time I sat down to do some work.

Putting certain metrics on that homepage, was the most important system I set up for my entire job. My favorite example:

  • Number of days since last meeting: for each company that was live in our pipeline, I try to never let more than 5 days pass without a touch point. This keeps things moving (“time kills all deals”), opens communication channels so there is blockage, avoids the pain of uncertainty for entrepreneurs, and forces me to keep moving towards a final decision.

What is on your homepage?
